Some words about the
proverbs
The proverbs and sayings are an unalterable part of Bulgarian and Greek culture. They are passed down from one generation to another and play an important role in maintaining and developing the national identity of both countries. In some way they represent the people’s wisdom and life experience gathered during the centuries.
Both Bulgarian and Greek languages are rich in idioms, sayings and proverbs. Though some of them are difficult to be translated, even a poor translation can give you an idea of some wise, absurd or endearing phrases that incorporate the wisdom and humour of past generations into everyday language. A lot of times the translation of the sayings and proverbs doesn’t give the whole idea and surely leaves a lot of questions due to misunderstandings; but proverbs are not mathematical equations.
What our teams have tried to do is to find some popular proverbs and present them to the other team looking for equivalent ones. We have reached to the conclusion that there are some proverbs that are expressed in exactly the same way in both languages, some others that slightly change from one language to another and others that each language uses different ways to express the same meaning. These are some of the proverbs that have won the race of time and we hope you will enjoy them, as we did!
